About the exhibit

The costume shown is traditionally worn in the Dinagyang Festival, celebrated on the fourth weekend of January in Iloilo City to commemorate the Christianization of the native people and to honor the Holy Child Jesus, the Santo Niño. Dinagyang is known for the frenetic stomping of feet and hypnotic drumbeats of a colorful parade of thousands of people in unique costumes, dancing and chanting all day and night.

Through the years, the festival has meant not only fun and laughter for the Ilonggos, the people of Iloilo, but also a time of thanksgiving and offering for the blessings received. Since its beginnings in 1968, Dinagyang has gained recognition as a world-class festival that draws visitors from around the world.
